42 Mile - December 2011

Alex, Omar and I headed off to 42 Mile to meet Glenn, Kenn and Matt who arrived earlier in the day.

It was going to be great conditions with light Northerlies and a Full moon the next day and then a southerly change coming in Saturday afternoon.

Most of the action that night was on the incoming tide, high tide was at

Matt bought a tuna head to berley up the area which attracted plenty of small salmon trout which we used for live bait but the crabs were out in force picking them off.

Little Bronze Whaler I landed using a squid strip for bait.

  • 1 Small Gummy Shark

42 Mile - March 2011

We met Matt at the Salt Creek Roadhouse and headed for 42 Mile beach via the 42 Mile crossing.

Matt on the first night preparing dinner. We slept in the swags for the two nights.

At the start of the beach Kens battery went flat but managed to get it going with a battery booster we borrowed from another fisherman.

On the first night Ken landed a nice little 70cm mulloway. This was the only touch we got the entire day until Matt landed a baby 40cm mulloway the next morning.

We managed to catch fresh mullet which we used as bait.
I had a fresh live mullet out all day on the Sunday and was not touched.
We decided to head back home one night early due to the lack of hits and fish.

Far West Coast - January 2011 (Part 2)

View Part 1

We departed Fowlers Bay for our journey to Yalata (The Granites) at 11am Wednesday morning.
After a quick lunch at the Nundroo road house we headed for the Coombra Track which would lead us to our camp site at 'The Granites'.

We had to get our compulsory photo at the camel, kangaroo and wombat sign.

The Coombra track sign.

Half way down the Coombra track we had a little trouble getting over this little dune.

The camp set-up at 'The Granites' campsite 1.

The main stretch of beach at 'The Granites'.

On our first and seconds day of fishing, there were plenty of oversize mullet in supply before the cool change rolled in ready to settle for the week.

Glenn with a monster mullet.

Simon fishing off the rocks as the cool change begins to come in.

This was the typical sized mulloway which was caught through out our stay at Yalata. This fish was caught using the head half of a salmon trout.

On our last days fishing we fished a hole about a kilometer west of the Granites camp site. It looked like the best hole we had fished in for the week. It reminded us of Geues Hole.

There was no end to the strong southerly winds according to the weather reports we had heard on the radio so we decided to head back to Adelaide 3 days early.

Far West Coast - January 2011 (Part 1)

We made our start for Fowlers Bay at 3:00am Sunday morning and arrive at 3:00pm ready for check in at the Eco Lodge.

Standing with the Cockatoo on the way to Fowlers Bay (Rob, Glenn, Billy, Simon).

We were greeted by gale force S/E winds which is the norm. for Fowlers Bay.
Ken met us at Fowlers Bay jetty which he fished for a few hours before we arrive and only managed to land a few rock cod and trumpeters which seem to be kens specialty.

At the front of the Eco Lodge Fowlers Bay (Simon, Rob, Glenn, Ken).

This is a video of some of the sand dunes we had to get over in order to get to Scotts Beach.

The 3 Snapper caught off the Ledge (Glenn, Simon, Billy).
We estimated their weight to be around 25lb, they measure 90cm.

Billy's Snapper caught on Graphite USA 12-25lb / Daiwa Certate 2500R 30lb braid.

Glenn's Snapper, first fish to be landed on the Ledge for the day.

Simon's Snapper off the Ledge.

One of the fresh Snapper being cooked whole on the BBQ back at the Eco Lodge.

The next day we concentrated on collecting some bait for the trip to Yalata. Glenn landed this nice 7lb salmon lure fishing with his Nitro Surf Assasin and Saltiga 4500 loaded with 20lb Saltiga Surf braid.

The water and weather conditions were perfect on the Tuesday.
